The Late Call

The phone rang at 2:17 a.m.

I almost didn’t answer. I’d been half-asleep on the couch with a half-finished glass of whiskey and the television muted on some late-night documentary about deep-sea creatures. The screen cast blue light across the dark living room. When the phone lit up I stared at the name for three full rings before I picked up.

“Hey,” I said, voice rough.

There was a pause long enough that I thought she might hang up. Then her voice came through, low and a little unsteady.

“I can’t sleep.”

That was all. No greeting. No apology for the hour. Just those three words and the sound of her breathing on the other end of the line.

I sat up slowly. “Where are you?”

“Home. In bed.” Another pause. “I keep thinking about last weekend.”

Last weekend. The hotel. The rain against the windows. The way she’d looked at me when I told her to get on her knees.

My pulse kicked hard.

“What about it?” I asked, even though I already knew.

She was quiet for a few seconds. I could hear sheets shifting. Then:

“I keep replaying the part where you had me bent over the desk. The way you held my wrists behind my back. How you wouldn’t let me come until I said please the way you wanted.”

The memory hit me like a physical thing. The desk. The city lights through the rain-streaked glass. The exact pitch of her voice when she finally broke and begged.

I swallowed. “Yeah.”

“I tried to touch myself tonight,” she said, softer now. “It wasn’t the same. My hands don’t feel like yours.”

The honesty in her voice did something sharp and hungry to my chest.

“Tell me what you did,” I said.

She hesitated only a second. “I got under the covers. Closed my eyes. Pretended it was you. I started slow… the way you do. Circles. Then I pushed two fingers inside and tried to angle them the way you always find.” A shaky breath. “It felt good for a minute. Then it just… wasn’t enough.”

I was already hard. Fully, almost painfully. I shifted on the couch, the whiskey forgotten.

“Keep talking,” I told her.

“I kept going anyway. I was thinking about the way you look at me when you’re inside me. That focused, almost angry look. Like you’re trying to memorize every second.” Her voice dropped even lower. “I came, but it was weak. Empty. And then I just lay there feeling worse.”

Silence stretched between us, thick with everything we weren’t saying.

“What do you need?” I asked.

She didn’t answer right away. When she did, the words came out almost like a confession.

“I need your voice. I need you to tell me what to do. I need it to feel like you’re here.”

Something in me locked into place. The same something that had taken over in that hotel room when she’d looked up at me from her knees and waited for instruction.

“Are you still under the covers?”

“Yes.”

“Take them off. All the way. I want you completely uncovered.”

I heard the rustle of fabric. A quiet sound of compliance.

“Done.”

“Now open your legs. Wide. Knees bent. Let me hear you settle.”

Another shift. A soft exhale.

“Good. Put your phone on speaker and set it next to you on the pillow. Both hands free.”

A soft click. Then her breathing was closer, clearer.

“Touch yourself the way I would,” I said. “Two fingers. Slow. Just the way you like at the beginning. Tell me when you’re wet enough that it slides easy.”

It didn’t take long. Her breathing changed first—shallower, then a small catch in her throat.

“I’m there,” she whispered.

“Circle your clit. Light. Barely touching. The way I do when I want you desperate.”

A soft, frustrated sound came through the speaker.

“Harder,” she said.

“No. Not yet. Keep it light. I want you aching for more.”

She made another sound, half protest, half surrender. I closed my eyes and let the image form: her on her back in the dark, legs open, fingers moving exactly the way I told her, body already starting to tense.

“Talk to me,” I said. “Tell me what it feels like.”

“Sensitive. Too sensitive. Like every nerve is right at the surface.” A shaky inhale. “I keep thinking about your mouth. How you lick me until I can’t stay still.”

My cock throbbed hard against my sweatpants. I didn’t touch myself yet. I wanted to stay focused on her.

“Slide those fingers inside. Deep. Curl them. Find that spot and press.”

Her breath hitched sharply.

“There—fuck—”

“Stay on it. Don’t move yet. Just pressure. Feel how full you are.”

She whimpered. The sound went straight through me.

“Now start moving. Slow thrusts. In and out. Keep your thumb on your clit, light circles. Match the rhythm.”

For the next several minutes I listened to her follow every instruction. The wet sounds of her fingers. The broken little noises she tried to keep quiet. The way her breathing grew ragged and then steadied again when I told her to slow down.

“You’re not allowed to come yet,” I said when her voice started to climb. “Not until I say.”

“Please—”

“Not yet. Take your fingers out.”

A frustrated groan. Then silence except for her breathing.

“Suck them clean,” I told her. “Taste yourself for me.”

The soft, wet sound of her mouth made my stomach tighten.

“Good girl. Now put them back. Three this time. Stretch yourself. I want you to feel the burn.”

She gasped when she did it. The sound was pure and unfiltered.

“Fuck yourself with them. Harder than before. I want to hear it.”

The wet, rhythmic sound filled the line. Her breathing turned into short, punched-out moans. I could picture her hips lifting off the bed, chasing the friction.

“Tell me what you’re thinking,” I ordered.

“You,” she managed. “Your cock. How thick it feels when you push in all at once. How you hold me down when I’m close so I can’t get away from it.”

My free hand finally went to the waistband of my sweatpants. I shoved them down just enough to free myself and wrapped my fingers around my cock. The first stroke was almost too much.

“I’m stroking myself listening to you,” I told her. “Thinking about how tight you get right before you come. How you clamp down and try to keep me inside.”

Her moan was louder this time.

“Please. I need—”

“Not yet. Slow down. Circle your clit again. Light. Build it back up.”

She obeyed, even though it clearly cost her. I could hear the effort in every breath.

We stayed like that for a long time—me edging her with nothing but my voice, her following every command, both of us getting closer and then pulling back again. The longer it went, the more desperate her sounds became. Soft curses. Broken pleas. My name, whispered like a prayer and a curse at the same time.

When I finally decided she’d had enough, my own voice was rough.

“Faster now. Hard as you can. Don’t stop until I tell you.”

The change was immediate. The wet sounds grew frantic. Her moans turned into near-sobs.

“Come for me,” I said. “Right now. Let me hear it.”

She broke with a sharp, high cry that cut off into a long, shuddering moan. I listened to every second of it, stroking myself in time with the fading pulses of her orgasm, and when she finally went quiet except for the ragged breathing, I let myself follow. The release hit hard and sudden, spilling over my fist while I kept the phone pressed to my ear, listening to her come down.

For a while neither of us spoke. Just breathing. Shared silence across the distance.

Then her voice, small and wrecked:

“Stay on the line?”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

I heard her settle back against the pillows. The soft sound of sheets being pulled up.

“I needed that,” she said eventually. “More than I realized.”

I cleaned myself up with a discarded T-shirt, still listening to her breathe.

“Next time,” I said, “don’t wait until two in the morning. Call me earlier. Or better—come over.”

A soft laugh, tired and warm. “You’d like that.”

“I’d like a lot of things.”

She was quiet for a moment. Then: “I keep thinking about what happens if we keep doing this. Late-night calls. Hotel rooms. The way it already feels bigger than it should.”

I stared at the muted television, the deep-sea creatures still drifting across the screen in silent blue light.

“Yeah,” I said. “Me too.”

Neither of us said the rest out loud. Not then.

But the call stayed open long after her breathing evened out into sleep. I sat in the dark living room with the phone against my ear, listening to the quiet rise and fall of her chest from miles away, and I knew with absolute certainty that the next time the phone rang at an impossible hour, I would answer on the first ring.

Because some hungers don’t go away just because the sun comes up.

They only get louder in the dark.
